My 2 Cents
11/4/08
Oklahoma Game

Commentary by David Max

That was the most painful five minutes of watching Nebraska football since I became a fan in 1962. Watching the Sooner Schooner get all that TV time reminded me of this funny Dave Humm story. Sometimes you just need to laugh at yourself. Kind of makes you appreciate what Alabama fans must have been experiencing during the first quarter when they lost to us in the 1972 Orange Bowl when we capitalized on their early turnovers. The best thing to do is put it behind you and move on. The goals and expectations of this transition season are still intact which are having a winning record and going to a bowl game.

It is important to see how the team reacts to this Murphy's Law game where everything that could possibly go wrong against a quality opponent did. It is also important to see how we as fans react as well. Now is the time when the phrase "We all stick together in all kinds of weather." gets tested. After the Baylor game there was a segment on talk radio about the empty seats in Memorial Stadium even though it was officially a sellout. We need to fill every seat and be loud in our support of the team this Saturday. The home field advantage needs to work in our favor when we are an underdog at home as we will be again this week. Let's show the team and coaches we are behind them. If you have tickets you aren't going to use this weekend let me know and I will facilitate getting them to a veteran.

Speaking of veterans, last weekend was the first annual Husker Salute by Husker Dan's Army in Lincoln and it was a huge success. Here's a story from the Nebraska State Paper. Here's a thank you from one of the attendees:

"Dan and all the people that made this past weekend happen,

I just wanted to say a heartfelt THANK YOU to all of you that made this past weekend happen. This past weekend and the watch party that you held for the soldiers and family members was something very special. It's not often that we military families get treated in the way we were this past weekend, in-fact in the 18 years that I have been a Military wife I have never been treated to a free weekend such as this past weekend! The generosity of total strangers blew me away, I cant believe the kindness my husband was shown while deployed, when he called me and told me that he received this huge box full of everything Nebraska, and I heard how much it meant to him in the tone of his voice, I knew then that Husker Fans were truly special folks! When these guys are deployed anything from home means a tremendous amount, and to receive a box full of Husker things was a real moral booster to say the least!

I know for my husband, who will be a Husker fan until he dies, this was a mind blowing, outstanding event for him! He is a Nebraskan and in all his 43 years on this planet he has never seen Memorial stadium the way he saw it this weekend, and for him its a true memory that he nor I will ever forget!

Rose"

Today we will elect a new President and next Tuesday is Veteran's Day. No matter what the outcome is on any given football Saturday it makes me proud to be a Nebraska fan living in America.

Just my 2 cents. What about yours?

GO BIG RED!!!
