My 2 Cents

Colorado Game

Commentary by David Max

The 2008 Colorado game lived up to being what has become the norm for the day after Thanksgiving game over the past decade or so. Nebraska was the heavy favorite by more than two touchdowns and Colorado took us down to the wire. There was a lot of smack talk by the players before the game and everyone was expecting this to be an "easy" game against a injury riddled team. It obviously didn't turn out that way.

The way it turned out was the most exciting Nebraska game in at least the last 10 years including the win over Michigan in the Alamo Bowl. Exciting games down to the wire are becoming the norm with Colorado. I was at the 1999 game when Aldrich missed the short field goal in regulation to send it into overtime. The next year was also decided by a last minute drive by the Huskers to win by a field goal. This game had the excitement of both of those game and more.

I have to be honest and thought it was over when it was 4th and 25 on the 40 with 1:50 left. I was at the Californians for Nebraska watch site in Orange, CA with about 100 other Husker fans and was ready to head home and play the what if game in my mind. Then it happened. Pelini sent Henery in for the attempt at the school record 57 yard field goal. Even the radio announcers couldn't believe it. I have watched the video and listened to the radio play by play several times and it still gives me goose bumps.

If that wasn't enough, the interception by Suh and the Roger Craig high stepping style return over Cody Hawkins for the clinching touchdown was the icing on the cake. I really hope he sticks around for next year. His NFL stock will continue to rise and he will leave with a degree. I can guarantee you that he won't hear Suuuuuh in the NFL like he hears it in Memorial Stadium.

Another thing that I noticed about the game this year is that most of the "smack" talk was done by the players and not the fans as it has been in the past. Maybe there is a real rivalry developing and we will be hearing fewer of the bad fan treatment stories in the future. I am planning on going to Boulder next year and hope to have a good experience with the fan base there. It's time to start developing some mutual respect instead of talking down to each other.

For those of us still soaking in the fantastic come from behind win here are a few links to enjoy. ESPN video of the field goal and interception. ESPN video of the field goal with Husker radio audio. Husker radio audio of the radio broadcast of both in WMA and MP3 files. HPTV video vault of all the games this season.

See you at the Bowl game. The only way to top this would be a winning 58 yarder against Florida State as time runs out on the clock.

Just my 2 cents. What about yours?

GO BIG RED!!!
