Stats & coverage March 23, 2002 NU wins 8-3 in first game of doubleheader vs. Texas Tech Lincoln -- Nebraska's Jeff Leise went 4-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored to lead the 13th-ranked Huskers to an 8-3 win over No. 23 Texas Tech in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Hawks Field. With the loss, Texas Tech falls to 20-12 on the season and 4-7 in the Big 12, while Nebraska improves to 14-6 and 6-2 in the league. Nebraska took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI double by Jed Morris plating Jeff Leise from second. Leise drew a leadoff base hit that just stayed fair down the first base line. Senior shortstop Gera Alvarez tied the score for the Red Raiders in the top of the second when he hit a solo home run over the left wall to give him a 13-game hitting streak. Junior second baseman Joel Buchenauer gave Tech its first lead of the series when he placed a line drive in right-center field plating Willie Durazo from second, giving Tech a 2-1 lead. The Huskers regained the lead in the bottom of the third on an RBI groundout by Jed Morris and an RBI single by Matt Hopper, putting Nebraska ahead 3-2. Nebraska put up four singles in the bottom of the fourth and got key hits from Daniel Bruce and Drew Anderson, giving the Huskers a 5-2 lead. Matt Harbin replaced Tech starter Chris Phillips in the bottom of the sixth after he gave up a pair of two-out doubles that gave Nebraska a four-run lead. Harbin gave up three straight singles and a committed a wild pitch and the Huskers extended their lead to 8-2. Senior Chris Phillips suffered the loss for Texas Tech and falls to 3-2 on the season after giving up seven earned runs on 12 hits through 5 2/3 innings of work.
