Stats & coverage April 7, 2002 Huskers take OU series with 12-2 win Lincoln -- Sophomore Aaron Marsden threw a complete-game three-hitter, while Jeff Leise and Jeff Blevins combined for seven RBIs, as No. 12 Nebraska pounded No. 17 Oklahoma, 12-2, in front of 3,350 at Hawks Field Sunday afternoon. Marsden, a sophomore from Grand Forks, N.D., improved to 2-1 on the season, as he struck out seven en route to his second complete-game performance of the year, as the game was shorted to seven innings because of the Big 12 10-run rule. He allowed two solo homers to Ryan Richardson, but only one other Sooner was in scoring position all afternoon. “The key for Aaron is for him to throw the ball around the zone because he’s got such good movement on his fastball,” Nebraska Coach Dave Van Horn said. “He’s a good athlete. It’s been a nice surprise to have him come on and do so well.” While Marsden was in control on the hill, Leise paced a 13-hit attack, going 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs, while Blevins, a Sand Springs, Okla., product, added two hits and drove in three runs as the Huskers improved to 21-10 overall and 9-6 in the Big 12. The Huskers, who took two of three from OU, moved into second place in the Big 12, percentage points behind league leader Oklahoma State (7-4), which was rained out Sunday at Baylor. “This was a big game today,” Nebraska Coach Dave Van Horn said. “After the way we finished Friday, we’re proud of this team and the way we played. We could have gone belly-up after Friday’s game. We could have gotten frustrated, but we relied on what got us here-hard work and dedication. I felt we were going to win today - the players stepped it up for us mentally and physically. We were swinging the bats well and tried to build on the lead.” Trailing 1-0 in the second after the first of two Ryan Richardson solo homers, the Huskers took the lead for good off Sooner starter Michael Bradbury. With two outs and the bases loaded, Leise’s two-run single gave the hosts a 2-1 lead. The Huskers knocked the Sooner starter out of the game in the third, scoring four times to extend the margin to 6-1. Blevins’ RBI single gave the Huskers a 3-1 lead the inning’s key play, a two-run single by Drew Anderson off OU reliever Jarod McAuliff that scored Josh Birmingham and Will Bolt. Bradbury took the loss for OU, allowing six runs on four hits to drop to 2-1 on the season. Nebraska added a run in the fourth on a Blevins RBI double before opening the floodgates with four runs off Evan Greusel in the fifth. Leise belted a two-run homer, his eighth of the season and second in as many days, before Blevins and Justin Seely added RBI to extend the margin before Seely, who had two hits off the bench, delivered a walk-off solo homer, his second of the year, for the final margin. Jed Morris also had three hits and scored three times, extending his hit streak to nine games, as the Huskers, who have won three straight series against top-25 teams, improve to 12-2 at Hawks Field this season. Richardson had two of the Sooners’ three hits and accounted for both runs on solo homers, his third and fourth round trippers of the season, as OU, which entered the weekend in a first-place tie in the league, fell to 19-12 overall and 7-5 in Big 12 action. The Huskers return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Omaha to square off with Creighton at the CU Sports Complex. First pitch is set for 3 p.m., in the first off three meetings between the instate rivals. Notes: Nebraska drew 14,156 for the three games against Oklahoma, shattering the previous school record of 10,686 set against Texas Tech last month…NU is now 7-2 against ranked teams at home this season…The Huskers have averaged 3,821 for the nine Big 12 games at Hawks Field…Leise now has eight homers, a total that surpasses his total of seven last season.
