Nebraska takes KU series with 9-1 victory

Lincoln -- Jed Morris went 2-for-5 with a pair of home runs, lifting No. 15 Nebraska to a doubleheader split against Kansas Sunday afternoon at Hawks Field. Morris drove in a career-high five runs, including an eighth-inning grand slam, as the Huskers won the nightcap, 9-1, after falling 14-3 in the opener.

The split left the Huskers (30-15) in second place in the Big 12 standings with a 14-10 record, as NU travels to Big 12 leader Texas, who completed a three-game sweep of Oklahoma State, next weekend.

Morris belted his 12th and 13th homers of the season, as the Huskers overcame an early 1-0 deficit and rode another strong performance from left-hander Brian Duensing to the win. The freshman from Omaha allowed one run on five hits in matching his career high with 7.1 innings to improve to 3-1 on the year.

"The positive thing about today was performance of the Brian Duensing," Nebraska Coach Dave Van Horn said.

"I thought he did a nice job and threw the ball well enough to keep us in the game early."

Kansas (17-23, 4-16 Big 12) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth, as Casey Spanish tripled before coming home on Ryan Baty’s RBI ground out.

The Huskers, who were held hitless through 4.1 innings, took the lead for good of Kansas starter Jake Wright, as Brandon Eymann’s bases-loaded two-out single scored Jeff Blevins and Drew Anderson to give the hosts a 2-1 lead.

The Huskers would eventually push the lead to 4-1, as Morris belted a leadoff homer off Wright to lead off in the sixth before Jeff Leise, who went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI, homered to right in the seventh. Wright took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits to drop to 2-5 on the season.

With one out in the top of the eighth, consecutive singles by Beau Thompson and Travis Metcalf put the tying run at the plate before Jeremy Becker got the Huskers out of the jam, retiring the next two hitters. Becker picked up his third save, throwing 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

The Huskers got some breathing room in the bottom of the frame, as NU loaded the bases with one out before Leise RBI single gave NU a 5-1 lead. Two batters later, Morris delivered the knockout punch, sending Kevin Wheeler’s offering into the parking lot outside the stadium for a grand slam and his third multi-homer game of the season.

"Today was a hitter’s day and the ball carried well," Van Horn said. "Fortunately for us it went out of the park in the eighth inning."

The Huskers return to action Tuesday evening when No. 13 Wichita State comes to Lincoln for the first time since 1992. First pitch between the Shockers and Huskers is set for 6:35 p.m. and the game will be carried on the Pinnacle Sports Radio Network. NU then concludes its conference schedule next weekend with a three-game series at eighth-ranked Texas.
