Nebraska upends Creighton, 9-1

Omaha -- Shane Komine threw five scoreless innings in his first start since April 5, while Will Bolt and Jeff Leise drove in two runs apiece in a five-run eighth, as No. 13 Nebraska thrilled the third-largest regular-season crowd in NCAA history with a 9-1 win over Creighton at Rosenblatt Stadium Wednesday evening.

Komine combined with freshman Phil Shirek on a four-hitter, as the Huskers, who have won five straight, improved to 36-17 on the season with the win. The Honolulu, Hawaii, native went the first five innings, allowing two singles and striking out seven to improve to 6-0 on the season.

In his last two appearances since missing over a month with elbow tendinitis, the two-time All-American has allowed just three hits - all singles - in eight scoreless innings, lowering his ERA to 1.84.

“It felt pretty good tonight and didn’t have any problems,” Komine, who improved to 6-0 with the win, said. “The crowd and the atmosphere really got me going out, and I went out there and threw strikes. The defense did a great job and we got some timely hitting late to close the door.”

The Huskers posted their seventh straight season series win over Creighton in front of a near capacity crowd of 18,758, as the crowd was the second largest in college baseball the season and the third-largest crowd to ever see a regular-season game. It marked the third straight year that the Huskers and Bluejays played to a crowd of over 13,000 at Rosenblatt Stadium.

“I was excited before the game,” Komine said. “It was just like the College World Series. We had a great crowd with a lot of support and I went out there and tried to enjoy it.”

“The numbers were incredible,” Nebraska Coach Dave Van Horn. “It was a lot of fun. We have talked about playing here, what it means and wanting to get back here.”

Shirek threw four innings of two-hit ball and tied a career high with seven strikeouts to earn his first save, as only Matt Deagas’ solo home run in the seventh prevented Nebraska’s fifth shutout of the season.

The Huskers strung together three consecutive hits in the top of the first, culminating in Matt Hopper’s RBI single to left, scored Daniel Bruce from second with NU’s first run. The Bluejays, who dropped to 27-21, loaded the bases in the first before Komine struck out Ryan Fitzgerald to end the threat. It would be Creighton’s only substantial threat off Komine, who left in the fifth with NU clinging to a one-run lead.

The Huskers put up a second run against Oldham in the sixth, as the senior sent the first pitch of the sixth off the center field wall before scoring on a wild pitch. The Creighton left-hander allowed two runs on eight hits in seven innings to drop to 7-3 on the season.

After Creighton closed to within 2-1 on Deagas’ third homer of the year, NU battered Bluejay closer Steve Grasley for five runs on four hits in one inning. Will Bolt’s bases-loaded double drove in a pair of runs before Joe Simokaitis added a sacrifice fly to give NU a 5-0 lead. Jeff Leise then smacked his 11th homer of the season, a two-run shot to right, giving the visitors a 7-1 advantage.

NU tacked on apair of runs in the ninth on a two-run single by John Grose, who had two of NU’s 15 hits in the win. In all, five different Huskers had at least two hits, including Matt Hopper, who finished 3-for-4 with an RBI.

The Huskers close out the regular season this weekend, when the Huskers play host to Louisiana Tech in a three-game series at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park. Friday’s first pitch between the Huskers and Bulldogs is set for 6:35 p.m.
