Exclusive to HuskerPedia by T H E F R E A K NU vs. Fresno State: game 1 | game 2 | game 3 March 1, 2002 | Photos To The Husker Faithful: You undoubtedly have already read various game recaps, so here are various tidbits about game two you might be interested in: -- Rodrigue's fastball hovered around the 80-82 mph area, while his change blew by hitters at 73-75 mph. -- Rodrigue pitched a masterful game. Throwing his fastball when hitters expected change, and change when hitters expected change, FSU could not get a grip on him. Although hit hard a couple of times, great defensive play kept runners off the bases. -- FSU player C.Lipsey should've been picked off in the first inning, but Hoppers throw to second was off the bag. -- FSU pitcher B. Fritz has an excellent move to first -- The hit Rodrigue gave up to C. Patrick in the third could've been a 4-3 ground out. Blevins made a great play to get his glove on the ball, but fumbled it once he tried to gain control. It wasn't scored an error because it was such a good play, regardless of the fumble. -- Hopper's home run in the fourth went over left center and went approx 370 feet -- Bonesio was clearly safe at first while attempting a sac bunt in the fourth. A beautiful bunt down the third base line, this missed call started a series of "make up" calls by the first base ump, in which he was calling runners safe which were out, and runners out which were safe. -- Rodrigue's change was not only baffling the FSU hitters; the FSU radio announcers insisted on calling it a breaking ball -- Don't be surprised if Eymann starts seeing the majority of time at third. Despite his one throwing error which pulled Hopper off the bag in game one, his defensive play has been STEllAR and he looks great on the hot corner -- Hopper made a fine defensive play in the sixth, as he snagged a shot well behind first and back handed the ball right into Rodrigues mitt for a 3-1 out. This reporter thinks Hoppers defensive skills that he has displayed so far are definitely on par with Dan Johnson, and with time may be in line with Ken Harveys (over 0.990 fielding % his last year) -- Attendance was listed at 3,354, but FSU is one of many baseball schools (national leader LSU included) that immediately count ALL season ticket holders as attending, then tacks on GA for the final count. You can bet your bottom dollar that NU will not need to do this to rank as a national leader in attendance. -- Daniel Bruce should thank Hopper for his home run. Fresno pitcher Hernandez clearly bared down on Hopper to strike him out, then let one linger over the plate in which the true freshman from Millard West crushed over the left center wall and hit the middle of the video score board. -- J. Seelys defensive play in the third with a man on was voted play of the game by the FSU radio announcers. Playing around left center, Seely ran down a fly ball launced to the left field warning track near the foul pole and made a one handed running grab. I had to blink to make sure it wasn't John Cole or Jamal Strong out there. Of course the radio announcers insist if the ball wouldn't have been caught, the outcome of the game would have been different -- Voted player of the game by the FSU announcers, C. Patrick got the award for breaking up Rodrigues no hitter. I guess thats kinda like a punter getting the award in football after his team just got drilled 55-0 -- Jeff Liese has improved his range in center field again reminding me of Jamal Strong. Probably our best defensive player -- We're bring the brooms today, look for the Huskers to SWEEP!!!
