Official recap
Rookies stole the show in the spring practice finale at Seacrest Field before 7,000 fans.
Soph-to-be quarterback Bob Churchich led the Whites to a 24-15 victory over the veteran-studded Red club in the night intra-squad windup.
With Churchich at the controls, the Whites marched to score with the opening kickoff, soph-to-be-fullback Pete Tatman going over from the two.
After the Reds evened the count on a three-yard plunge by soph-to-be Bob Weiman in the second quarter, the Whites turned sensational. Junior-to-be-quarterback Henry Woods hit soph-to-be end Langston Coleman with a 75-yard pass-run TD strike, and just before the half, veteran kicker Duncan Drum booted a 21-yard field goal to provide a 17-7 halftime margin.
Senior-to-be fullback Joe McNulty gave the fans a nifty treat and the Whites a comfortable margin late in the third period. First the Wymore fullback broke loose from several tacklers and dashed 66 yards to the Red two. Then he plunged over for the TD and a 24-7 lead.
The Reds capped the offensive show with some aerial pyrotechnics of their own — a re-run of former Hastings High action. A pair of sophs-to-be, quarterback Wayne Weber and end Tom Smith, combined on an 87-yard TD pass-run with 1:09 left in the third quarter.
