Some 40,000 fans jammed K-State's new stadium and the Wildcats struck early. Dickey engineered an 80-yard drive that was helped by a pass interference call at the NU 6. Mack Herron scored for a 7-0 lead.

But Nebraska's Black Shirts slammed the door from that point on. In the third quarter Van Brownson came in to relieve Jerry Tagge and the Huskers marched into field goal territory. Paul Rogers hit his sixth field goal of the season, tying the NU record, and his 39-yarder cut the Wildcat lead to 7-3 with 6:32 left in the third quarter.

The second time the Huskers got the ball in the fourth quarter, Schneiss went to work. Helped by a Jim McFarland block, Dan tore 34 yards to the Wildcats 14 and on the next play he caught a 12-yard pass to set up the clincher. Brownson sneaked over for the winning TD with 12:08 left in the game.

Nebraska's defense took over and blunted the high-scoring Wildcats at every turn. K-State wound up on the NU six as time ran out, and the Huskers headed for Oklahoma with a chance to tie for the Big 8 title—a long, tough fight had been successful.
