Colorado Boulder, CO - Keasha Cannon scored a career-high 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds, but it was not nearly enough as the Nebraska womens basketball team lost to No. 13 Colorado, 95-60, in front of 3,245 at the Coors Events Center in Boulder, Colo, on Wednesday evening.
With the loss, the Huskers fell to 12-11 overall and 2-8 in Big 12 Conference play, while the Buffaloes improved to 18-6 overall and 8-3 in league action. Colorado, which extended its overall winning streak to eight games, never trailed in the game, building the lead to 49-23 at halftime after leading by as many as 27 points in the first half. Nine different Buffaloes scored in the first half, led by Jenny Rouliers 11 points and Tera Bjorklunds eight first-half points. The Buffaloes came out firing on all cylinders, using runs of 9-0, 12-0 and 10-0, early in the first half to turn a 5-4 lead into a 40-17 advantage with more than five minutes left in the half. At one point, Colorado was shooting 66.7 percent (16-24) from the field in the first half before missing its final six field goal attempts to finish the half shooting 53.3 percent (16-30) from the field, including 44.4 percent (4-9) from three-point range. The Buffaloes also found their way to the free throw line early, connecting on 76.5 percent (13-17) of their attempts, while Nebraska was held scoreless at the line (0-2). While Colorado was cruising, Nebraska struggled to shoot just 35.5 percent (11-31) from the field, including just 14.3 percent (1-7) from three-point range in the first half. The Buffaloes also outrebounded the Huskers, 24-12, in the decisive first half, while forcing 10 Husker turnovers and committing just seven turnovers of their own. For the game, Roulier led six Buffaloes in double figures with 17 points, including five three-pointers. Kate Fagan added 15 points, Bjorkland contributed 13 points, Mandy Nightingale 12 points, Sabrina Scott 11 points and Britt Hartshorn pitched in 10 points. As a team, Colorado shot 52.5 percent (31-59) from the field, including 50.0 percent (10-20) from three-point range, while hitting 79.3 percent (23-29) of its free throws. The Buffs outrebounded the Huskers, 39-30, and forced 20 NU turnovers, while committing just 13 of their own. Cannons 25-point effort was the Huskers top individual scoring performance of the season. She connected on 11-of-15 shots from the field, including one three-pointer and a pair of free throws. She also added one assist, two steals and two blocked shots. Stephanie Jones was the only other Husker to join Cannon in double figures with 12 points, while grabbing seven boards. No other NU player managed more than five points, as the Huskers shot just 40.6 percent (26-64) from the field, including just 18.2 percent (2-11) from three-point range. Nebraska also connected on just 66.7 percent (6-9) of its free throw attempts. With the win, Colorado extended its home winning streak against Nebraska in Boulder to 18 games, while producing the Buffaloes most lopsided win in series history, surpassing their previous largest margin of 26 points of 81-55 on Jan. 21, 1994. Colorados point production was also the highest output by an NU opponent this season, surpassing the 88 points scored by Drake on Dec. 16. It was also the second-most points scored by CU in series history, falling short of the Buffaloes 96-point effort on March 4, 1986. Nebraska returns home to play host to No. 11 Kansas State (21-3, 9-2) at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Sunday, Feb. 10, at 1 p.m. in a game televised live nationally by FOX Sports Net.
