Kansas State Lincoln - Keasha Cannon unleashed season highs with 27 points and 16 rebounds, while Katie Robinette added a double-double of her own with 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Nebraska womens basketball team to a 67-52 upset win over No. 11 Kansas State in front of a season-high crowd of 6,066 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln on Sunday afternoon.
The win over the Wildcats ended a 17-game losing streak for the Huskers against Associated Press Top 25 teams and matched the highest-ranked team that NU has beaten in five seasons under Coach Paul Sanderford. The Huskers also defeated a No. 11 Alabama squad, 74-66, in Sanderfords second game as NUs coach on Nov. 16, 1997. Nebraskas last win over a top-25 team came with a 69-61 victory over then-No. 25 UC Santa Barbara in Lincoln on Nov. 19, 2000. With the win, the Huskers improved to 13-11 overall and 3-8 in Big 12 Conference action, while Kansas State fell to 21-4 overall and 9-3 in league action. Cannon, a 5-10 junior guard from Kansas City, Kan., produced the best individual performance by a Husker this season with team bests in points and rebounds, while managing her fifth double-double of the year. But it was far from an individual effort. Robinette, a 6-2 freshman forward from South Sioux City, Neb., added one of her best efforts of the season with her fourth double-double. Robinette also came up big in the clutch for the Huskers, scoring eight points while snagging all three of her steals and pitching in NUs only blocked shot of the day, during a decisive 12-0 run midway through the second half. With Nebraska clinging to a 50-46 lead, Robinette turned a steal into a layup to start the run with 9:44 left in the game. She added two more layups and a jumper to go along with an offensive rebound, before Cannon put the exclamation point on the run with her jumper to give the Huskers a 62-46 advantage with 6:16 left in the game. Along with the scoring and rebounding of Cannon and Robinette, freshman point guard Jina Johansen played her best game as a Husker in her first career start. The 5-8 guard from Dannebrog, Neb., scored four points, grabbed two rebounds and dished out a career-high nine assists while playing 39 minutes for the Huskers. Johansens proficiency at the point guard position allowed Cannon to move to shooting guard, where she decimated the Wildcats throughout the day. Sophomore Shannon Howell also provided a stellar defensive effort, shutting down Kansas States Laurie Koehn, the nations top three-point shooter. Koehn, who was averaging 3.8 made three-pointers per game while shooting 44.8 percent from long range, was held to just 1-of-4 shooting from three-point range, contributing just eight points, four assists and two rebounds, while committing four turnovers. Howell, a 5-10 guard from Los Angeles, Calif., matched Koehns production with eight points, three rebounds, one assist and two steals. Sophomore center Nicole Ohlde led the Wildcats with 19 points and six rebounds, while freshman forward Kendra Wecker managed 11 points and seven rebounds despite battling foul trouble for much of the second half. Ohlde and Wecker were the only two Wildcats to produce double figures, as Nebraska held Kansas State to its lowest offensive output of the season with 52 points, including a season-low 35.8 percent shooting. The Huskers also dominated the glass, producing a plus-19 rebound margin (48-29), tying their best rebound margin of the season. The Huskers also controlled the offensive boards, 13-4, which led to a 13-0 advantage in second-chance points. The Huskers came out firing from the opening tip, hitting eight of their first 11 shots from the field, as NU built an 18-point lead in the first 10 minutes. Cannon and Robinette provided much of the Huskers early offense, combining for 18 of Nebraskas first 26 points. Only the effort of Ohlde, who scored six of KSUs first eight points and finished with 13 of her 19 points before halftime, kept the Wildcats in the contest. Nebraska led 29-12 before KSU, which missed its first nine shots from long range, finally connected on Megan Mahoneys three-pointer. The basket triggered a 13-2 Wildcat run, which pushed the visitors to within 31-26 after Koehns jumper with 3:28 remaining. NU quickly pushed the lead back to nine and took a 37-31 lead into the locker room. The Huskers travel to Kansas Wednesday evening for a 7:05 p.m. contest with the Jayhawks at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence.
